The entertainment world is mourning the loss of McCanna ‘Mac’ Sinise, the son of esteemed actor Gary Sinise, who passed away at the young age of 33 after a courageous battle with a rare and formidable adversary: chordoma, a ‘one in a million’ form of cancer.
Mac’s journey was marked by both profound challenges and inspiring triumphs. Diagnosed just two months after his mother, Moira, faced her own cancer diagnosis, Mac confronted his condition with the same tenacity and spirit that defined his life. His father, Gary Sinise, shared a heartfelt tribute, expressing the family’s grief and the pride he felt as Mac’s father: ‘I am so blessed, fortunate, and proud to be his dad.’
Chordoma, a cancer originating in the spine, affects a mere 300 people in the U.S. annually. While 70% of initial tumors can be successfully removed, Mac belonged to the unfortunate 30% for whom the cancer returned. Despite this, he continued to engage with life passionately, contributing to the Gary Sinise Foundation and completing his album ‘Resurrection and Revival.’
Mac’s resilience was akin to the soldier in the film ‘1917,’ as described by his father: ‘running through the battlefield, bombs going off all around him…yet he keeps getting back up, refusing to quit and keeps running forward.’ This metaphor captures the essence of Mac’s indomitable spirit throughout his five-and-a-half-year battle with chordoma.
The Sinise family has been touched by the outpouring of support, with many choosing to honor Mac’s memory through contributions to the Chordoma Foundation or the Gary Sinise Foundation. These gestures of kindness and solidarity have provided comfort during a time of immense sorrow.
Mac’s legacy extends beyond his battle with cancer. A talented musician and a graduate of the USC Thorton School of Music, he played the drums in his father’s band, the Lt. Dan Band, and completed an album that stands as a testament to his creative spirit and determination. His work with the Gary Sinise Foundation showcased his commitment to serving others.
In sharing their story, Gary Sinise hopes to cast a light on the profound impact Mac had on those around him. ‘An incredible inspiration to those who knew and loved him, he faced his battle with grace, courage, and love,’ Sinise reflected. Mac’s unwavering love for his family, his passion for music, and his dedication to helping others will continue to inspire and be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
