A game missing the platinum trophy
On February 6, 2024, the exciting new multiplayer shooting game, Foamstars, was launched for PS5 and PS4, featuring dynamic seasonal maps, quirky weapons, and colorful characters that promise a thrilling experience.
Yes, you read that right! Foamstars is one of the rare games that does not offer a platinum trophy for completing all other trophies, featuring a total of just 24 trophies with none being silver or gold, making the highest achievement a bronze, achievable only after completing the other 23.
But what’s the reasoning behind this unique approach? Why would a game intentionally withhold the satisfaction of a shiny platinum trophy from its players after their hard work and dedication? The creators of Foamstars believe their mission is to focus on pure enjoyment rather than the allure of trophies.
In an interview with PlayStation Lifestyle, Foamstars director Tom Jones emphasized, ‘we aimed to design a game centered around gameplay enjoyment rather than trophies.’ He elaborated that they wanted to create something accessible yet challenging, promoting fun over slogging through achievements.
Jones explained that the choice to omit the platinum trophy was meant to challenge trophy hunters, not to belittle their passion. ‘While we respect players who enjoy collecting trophies, we aimed to encourage them to engage with the game for its enjoyment over its rewards,’ he stated, hoping to see if players could still have fun without the platinum incentive.
He further noted that the developers’ decision was not a display of incompetence or negligence, asserting, ‘We poured our hearts into Foamstars, and we’re extremely proud of the outcome; leaving out the platinum was a thoughtful choice.’
Polarized views
However, not everyone is on board with this philosophy. Some players have openly boycotted the game due to dissatisfaction with its trophy list, one commenting on TrueTrophies, ‘This is ridiculous—how can a game in 2024 lack a gold trophy? It feels like an insult to trophy hunters. I won’t buy this until they add a platinum trophy.’
Another player expressed that the absence of a platinum trophy was a deal-breaker, stating, ‘I was eager to play Foamstars, but after seeing the trophy list, my enthusiasm vanished. I gamify for trophies, not just for fun; without a platinum, it’s not worth my time.’
However, the trophy list in the game doesn’t affect everyone. A few gamers have even accepted the challenge of playing the game without a platinum trophy, applauding the game for its audacious and creative decision. A player commented, “I think this is awesome,” on the Dot Esports website. “I think this is a novel and inventive method to make a game stand out from the pack. This game is already platinum, hence in my opinion, it doesn’t need a platinum award.”
Conversely, one gamer shared their enjoyment of Foamstars despite the lack of trophies, saying, ‘I truly love playing Foamstars and couldn’t care less about the trophies. Even without a platinum, I relish in the challenge of unlocking every achievement—this game promises to test my skills and passion, and I’m all in!’
So, what do you think? Should Foamstars have a platinum trophy, or is it fine without one? Does the trophy list enhance your gaming experience or detract from it? We’d love to hear your opinions in the comments below, and don’t miss our guide on how to unlock all trophies in Foamstars!
