In the world of gaming, where player-versus-player (PvP) modes are often seen as a staple, Arrowhead Game Studios is taking a stand with their popular third-person shooter game, Helldivers 2. The studio’s CEO, Johan Pilestedt, has made it clear that they will ‘never’ add a PvP mode to the game. This decision, he explains, is to ‘reduce toxic elements from the community.’
Pilestedt’s statement came in response to a fan’s request on Twitter for the addition of a more competitive player-on-player mode to complement the game’s cooperative play. The CEO’s refusal is backed by a strong reason: the desire to foster an environment that’s ‘supportive, fun, and where we all are fighting on the same side!’
In a later tweet, Pilestedt clarified that Arrowhead was ‘not scared’ of adding in a PvP mode. Instead, the decision was a conscious choice to focus on creating a challenging cooperative player-versus-environment (PvE) experience. He pointed out that ‘there are plenty, actually most, games that provide PvP,’ and that Arrowhead aims to cater to those who ‘just want to have a challenging time with friends but in a PvE setting.’
For those still craving the thrill of PvP, Pilestedt recommends trying out Escape from Tarkov, another popular game known for its competitive focus.
Helldivers 2 has been a massive success since its release, achieving a record for PlayStation Studios publishing by reaching over 150,000 concurrent players in its first weekend. The game continues to draw in large numbers, routinely getting up to about 200,000 players in the evenings.
Despite this success, the game’s launch was not without its challenges. The initial surge of players led to several bugs and launch issues, particularly with the game’s servers. However, Arrowhead has been quick to address these issues, deploying patches and network improvements to stabilize the game.
Looking ahead, Pilestedt assures fans that this is ‘just the beginning’ for Helldivers 2. The studio is committed to building the game into a ‘long lasting and successful game and a beloved IP.’ With its unique focus on cooperative play and its commitment to reducing toxicity in the gaming community, Helldivers 2 is certainly a game to watch.
