Faults in many units can lead to a range of problems.

The recall will cover 170,000 vehicles in Korea and is expected to reach 500,000 globally, targeting models like the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Genesis GV60, and Kia EV6, which have faulty integrated charging control units (ICCU) that manage power and battery control in EVs.

The recall decision was driven by numerous reports of ICCU failures, especially from Korean internet car communities, prompting Hyundai and Kia to move from offering free repairs to a formal recall to ensure vehicle safety and performance.

In response to the recall, Hyundai and Kia will provide software updates and replace faulty ICCUs if necessary, amid investigations by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into power loss complaints in the IONIQ 5, linked to ICCU overcurrent damage.

This recall demonstrates this company’s sense of responsibility.

This recall underscores Hyundai and Kia’s commitment to customer safety and proactive safety measures, though industry observers worry it could slow the already sluggish EV market in Korea, which has lagged behind global growth.
