Kid Cudi and Kanye West: How They Went from Beefing to BFFs

Kid Cudi and Kanye West have had a complicated relationship over the years, but they seem to have buried the hatchet and become close friends again. Here’s a look at how they went from collaborators to rivals to allies.

Kid Cudi and Kanye West first met in 2008, when Cudi was signed to West’s label, GOOD Music. The two hit it off and worked together on several songs, including West’s 808s & Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Cudi’s Man on the Moon series. They also formed a group called Kids See Ghosts, which released a self-titled album in 2018.

However, things took a turn for the worse in 2016, when Cudi went on a Twitter rant and called out West and other rappers for being fake and not supporting him. He wrote, “I need y’all to know I got so many haters within the industry and these clowns know I’m bout to crush their entire existence. Everyone thinks they’re soooo great. Talkin top 5 and be having 30 people write songs for them.” He then added, “My tweets apply to who they apply. Ye, Drake, whoever. These niggas don’t give a fuck about me. And they ain’t fuckin with me.”

West, who was performing at a concert in Tampa, Florida, at the time, responded by stopping the music and addressing Cudi on stage. He said, “Kid Cudi, don’t ever mention ‘Ye name. I birthed you. We all dealing with that emo shit all the time… Don’t ever mention ‘Ye name. Don’t try to say who I can do songs with. You mad ’cause I’m doing songs with Drake. Ain’t nobody telling ‘Ye who to do songs with. Respect the God!”

The feud seemed to escalate, as Cudi checked into rehab for depression and suicidal urges, and West was hospitalized for a mental breakdown. However, in 2017, the two reconciled and hugged it out on stage at a concert in Sacramento, California. They also reunited in the studio and worked on their joint album, Kids See Ghosts, which received critical acclaim and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Cudi revealed why he forgave West and how they rekindled their friendship. He said, “I think me and Kanye are just in a good place. I think we were always in a good place, but we just had a misunderstanding. I think he was going through some things, and I was going through some things, and we just weren’t on the same page. But we never stopped loving each other, you know? That’s my brother.”

He continued, “I think he just needed some time to figure some things out, and I needed some time to figure some things out. And once we did that, we came back together, and it was like nothing ever happened. We just picked up where we left off. And I think that’s the beauty of our relationship. We can go through some shit and still come out on the other side stronger than ever.”

Cudi also praised West for being a genius and a visionary, and said he learned a lot from him. He said, “He’s always been an inspiration to me. He’s always pushed me to be better, to challenge myself, to try new things. He’s always been there for me, even when I was going through my darkest times. He’s always been a loyal friend. And I think that’s rare in this industry, to have someone who’s always got your back, no matter what.”

He added, “He’s just a genius, man. He’s one of the greatest artists of all time, and I’m honored to be able to work with him and call him my friend. He’s always got something new and exciting to share with the world, and I’m just happy to be a part of it. He’s a legend, and I’m just trying to keep up with him.”

Kid Cudi and Kanye West have proven that they can overcome their differences and make beautiful music together. They have also shown that they have a genuine bond that goes beyond the industry. They are more than just collaborators, they are brothers.
