In a strategic move to reshape their roster and manage salary cap space, the Las Vegas Raiders have released quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, alongside backup quarterback Brian Hoyer and defensive tackle Jerry Tillery. This decision, announced just as the 2024 league year commenced, was part of a broader plan by the Raiders’ new leadership to build a competitive team for the upcoming seasons.
The release of these players, particularly Garoppolo and Renfrow, marks a significant shift in the Raiders’ strategy. Garoppolo, who joined the Raiders last offseason with a three-year, $72.75 million contract, was expected to be a key player after taking over from Derek Carr. However, his tenure with the Raiders was marred by injuries and underperformance, leading to his benching midway through last season. His situation was further complicated by a suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, which allowed the Raiders to void his $11.25 million guaranteed salary for 2024.
The Raiders will incur a $17.1 million dead cap hit due to Garoppolo’s release but will also save at least $11.3 million on this year’s cap. The team is now looking at a quarterback competition between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew, the latter having recently agreed to a two-year, $25 million deal. Additionally, the Raiders hold the 13th pick in next month’s draft, which could see them add another quarterback to the mix.
Hunter Renfrow’s departure is also notable. After a standout 2021 season with 103 catches for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection and a two-year contract extension worth $31.7 million, Renfrow’s productivity declined over the next two seasons. Injuries in 2022 and a lack of production in 2023 led to the decision to release him rather than pay his $11.2 million base salary for 2024. Renfrow’s release saves the Raiders $8.21 million in salary cap room, despite a $5.5 million dead cap hit.
The Raiders’ roster changes didn’t stop with their offensive lineup. Defensive tackle Jerry Tillery, a former first-round pick claimed on waivers from the Chargers during the 2022 season, and backup quarterback Brian Hoyer, who lost his only start last season, were also released. These moves are part of a broader overhaul by general manager Tom Telesco and coach Antonio Pierce, who are focused on building a team capable of contending in the NFL.
Fans and analysts will be closely watching to see how these changes affect the team’s performance as the Raiders navigate this transitional period. With the new league year underway, the Raiders are positioning themselves to maximize their resources and pave the way for success in the upcoming seasons.
